What makes Dhikala special

Dhikala overlooks the Ramganga reservoir and is surrounded by vast chaurs (grasslands) where wildlife gathers. Its major safari routes — Sambar Road, Thandi Sadak, the grassland tracks and Crocodile Point/High Bank — are famous among wildlife lovers and photographers. It's the only zone where you can stay overnight inside the forest at the well-known Dhikala FRH.

How to reach Dhikala

Dhikala is entered through the Dhangarhi Gate, on the road from Ramnagar. From the gate, it's a long forest drive to the Dhikala rest house complex.

• Day visitors: Enter Dhikala only by canter safari
• Overnight guests: Travel in via jeep as part of the rest-house arrangement

Best time to visit Dhikala

Dhikala is generally open from mid-November to mid-June and closed through the monsoon. Each season has its own appeal:

• Winter (Nov–Feb): Cool, pleasant, good for birds and comfortable safaris. Carry warm layers — early mornings are cold.
• Spring/early summer (Mar–mid-June): Warmer, with animals gathering near water — often considered prime time for wildlife movement.

Entry rules & important guidelines

• Day-visit jeep safari into Dhikala is not allowed — only canter for day visitors; jeep safari is for overnight guests.
• Carry valid government ID (the same used at booking) for every visitor.
• No getting out of the vehicle during safari, except at permitted points.
• Vegetarian food only; no alcohol inside the park.
• No pets, no loud behaviour, no littering — follow all forest staff instructions.
• Entry/movement after sunset is not permitted except for staying guests within fenced areas.

Travel tips

• Book early — Dhikala canter seats and rest-house stays are in very high demand.
• Pack warm — nights are cold even in spring; mornings on the canter are chilly.
• Carry essentials — torch, power bank, water, snacks, basic medicines, sunscreen and a cap.
• Manage connectivity expectations — mobile signal is limited; tell family you may be hard to reach.
• Be patient and quiet — the best sightings come to calm, respectful visitors.
